Workshops and Masterclasses

These Workshops are intended for novice / intermediate and experienced stitchers who want to play and learn something new. All Workshops and Masterclasses are using the sewing machine. On most you will be using Free Motion so will need a darning foot.

All workshops run from 9.30 until 4 (can be adjusted by arrangement) with a short lunch break. A suitable room with sufficient plug points and tables will be needed.

All the Same but Different.

In this workshop you will create a piece of work using patchwork and quilting techniques on the sewing machine. Each participant will be given a pack containing the same materials and trims. The aim is to create something that starts the same but ends up different for each person. You will be given a starting point of a piece of textile or a painting that is the same for everyone and finish with a 7” completed square. A fantastic group workshop.  All materials provided.

Take One Image

In this workshop you will choose one simple image and work it in many ways. Embroidery, quilting, patchwork, applique, transfer paints, drawing…… a variety of techniques will be explored.  The intention is to make fabric pages for a book that can be added to over time. A good workshop for anyone who wants to experiment and learn new techniques for an ongoing project.  Some materials to be provided. A requirements list will be given.

Boro – Making & Mending

An interesting take on making and mending this workshop will concentrate on the Japanese art of Boro – on the sewing machine using indigo dyed denim fabrics. You will complete 9 interesting squares of free motion stitched denim (some hand stitching involved). Once finished the pieces can be made into a wall hanging, cushion or added to a garment.  A great workshop for anyone wanting to have a go at free motion and practising using automatic stitches on the machine. All materials provided.

Little Purses

You will complete several little bags/ purses that are inspired by purses from the past. Using original antique items as your primary source you will use a variety of embroidery /patchwork techniques on the sewing machine to create exquisite tiny treasures. An excellent workshop for anyone who likes to work on a project that has a practical outcome – as an evening bag or just a useful accessory. Some materials will be provided, some will be things you need to bring along. A requirements list will be given.

Jackets Refashioned

In this exciting workshop you will refashion a linen jacket of your own into a unique one-off wearable art jacket. You will use a variety of machine techniques such as applique, text writing, embellishing etc to transform an ordinary garment into a stunning work of art. This is the perfect workshop for the person who wants to stand out in the crowd and wear something that no one else has! Some materials will be provided, some you will want to bring along. A requirements list will be given.

Vintage Cloth Dolly

In this workshop you will create your very own 12” cloth dressed doll using antique and vintage materials and trims. You will learn to stuff and paint cloth, apply hair, embellish, and make clothing. Idea workshop for anyone who loves the uniqueness of a handmade doll to be handed down as an heirloom to future generations. Some materials provided. A requirements list will be given.

  Masterclasses

Masterclasses are for experienced advanced stitchers who want to challenge their knowledge and techniques. It’s a time to really explore your creativity and stretch your thinking.  These are design and stitch workshops where the student should have a firm understanding of their sewing machine and its potential and embroidery, patchwork and quilting techniques. These classes are not a step-by-step teaching session. Design, stitch, and technique advice will be given, and each student will be mentored. They are a starting point for an ongoing body of work and students should not expect to complete a piece in the workshop.

Exploring Antique Textiles Masterclass

A Design and Machine Stitch Master Class that will enable you to intensively observe an exquisite antique stitched textile from the artists collection, there will be a variety of pieces to choose from.

Working from a primary source you will explore the piece and use it as inspiration for a design to create your own piece of contemporary work. The outcomes for the day will be recorded information in sketchbooks and photographs, stitched samples and several small finished 5” works of textile artwork.

A camera or I pad would be useful, sketchbook and pencils/paints/crayons are essential. Some materials provided. A requirements list will be given.

Creating a story – Art Quilts Masterclass

A Design and Machine Stitch Masterclass where you will tell a story in stitch. Using patchwork, applique, and quilting techniques you will consider a serious subject and express the narrative in a stitched work of art. You will work from photographs, books or just an idea (provided or your own) as your initial starting point. Ideal for the learner who wants to work expressively and to create from their own ideas rather than working from a pattern – definitely not for the traditional quilter!  You will make several samples, lots of drawn designs (don’t worry if you can’t draw in the traditional sense- lots of other ways to express yourself) to use as your jumping off point to create your own art quilt. Some materials provided. A requirements list will be given.

Other Masterclasses can be arranged to suit your group needs. A series of Mentoring sessions for groups can also be provided as required.

Masterclasses only: Minimum of 6 students, maximum of 8
